Hiroshima has a dark past that precedes it but other than the infamous A-bomb dome site, there are a few hidden gems that only a local would be able to show you. From Yamato Museum, a mere 40 minutes train ride away, where you can learn about the largest battleship in the world - the ‘Yamato’ and explore a collection of authentic relics from World War II with the Kure port as your encompassing sea views. Perhaps, submarines are more up your alley, and if so- the JMSDF Kure Museum awaits, four floors designed as a huge submarine make the outside as intriguing as the inside. Try their famed Navy Curry as you bite into history, enjoying a Japanese curry with its origin inside the battleships of the Meiji Era, more than a century ago.

Meet your local guide and head out of the city for a 40-minute train ride that will lead you to the port and major shipbuilding city of Kure, situated on the Seto Inland Sea. From here you'll be able to access the Yamato museum, named after the largest battleship in the world. The museum is interestingly located where the battleship was originally completed. Browse the exhibits as you take a trip back in time and if it's not an information overload just yet- the JMSDF Kure Museum is just next door. Known as the  “Iron Whale Museum '' here you can browse torpedos, vessel parts and just about everything else you’d hope to see at a world-class military museum.
