Tokyo might be the coolest city I’ve ever visited in my life. As Japan’s capital, it sees so many tourists every single year and for a very good reason. This city is filled with amazing things to do and there’s plenty to experience. I’m not sure anyone needs convincing when it comes to visiting Tokyo, but here are the main 5 reasons why I think everyone should go there at least once in their life.
It’s the biggest city in the World
I actually didn’t know this until I went there, but Tokyo is the biggest city on Earth. With more than 37 million habitants and views that seem to stretch forever, it’s quite mind-blowing to experience such a place. I don’t think I have ever felt so tiny in a city before and, let me tell you, it gives you some perspective. Especially going to a rooftop and seeing that endless city light up at night is an unforgettable experience.
Even though it’s huge and extremely populated, it’s incredibly safe
It’s quite remarkable that such a gigantic city as Tokyo can be so safe, but it’s a fact. According to the Safe City Index of 2021, it’s the 5th safest city in the World. Other rankings even consider it the number 1 safest city on Earth. It makes total sense, as Japan is regarded as an extremely safe country to visit and live in. I’ve traveled to 39 countries so far and I’ve never worried less about my wallet than when I visited Japan, to be honest.
High-tech is everywhere
If you visit Japan, technology will be a part of your daily life. From toilets that come with buttons and instructions to cafes with robots as workers, Japan’s love for technology isn’t exactly a secret. If you visit the country’s country, you’re bound to find all that high-tech on steroids.
Don’t be surprised to see levitating desserts and vending machines that will sell you most of the things you might need - it’s a part of the japanese lifestyle and I can guarantee you that you’ll get spoiled by it forever after just a couple of days in that high-tech capital.
It’s not as expensive as you might think
Japan is regarded by many people as such an expensive country to visit, but after spending 46 days there, I have to admit it’s not as bad as many people imagine. The capital is no exception. There are plenty of cheap accommodation options in Tokyo, with hostels starting at around 15 euros if you’re booking in advance, and so many affordable food options.
Don’t get me wrong: Tokyo is definitely a place where you’ll easily break the bank if you don’t watch out. All I’m saying is that there are many ways to keep costs down if you’re really committed to traveling on a low budget, so don’t let the myths deter you from visiting this amazing city!
There are great day trips to do from Tokyo
Tokyo is pretty incredible in itself and you could probably spend several weeks or even months there without ever getting bored. But if you’re looking to explore Japan outside of the capital, there are plenty of options for you as day trips from Tokyo. A day trip to Mount Fuji might be the most obvious option, as it really doesn’t take long to get there by either train or bus and Mount Fuji is probably something you really don’t wanna miss out on when visiting Japan!
Another great day trip to take from Tokyo is Nikko. This beautiful place is located 150 kms away from Tokyo and you can be there in around 2 or 3 hours, making it possible to visit on a day trip if you’re willing to put up with a long day in order to explore more of Japan without leaving your Tokyo base.
I hope these reasons convinced some of you to take the step and start planning a trip to Japan and its unique capital. Tokyo will forever be one of the most special and unforgettable cities I’ve ever visited in my life, so I hope you get the chance to experience that someday too.
