Bangkok’s Top Temples

Amidst Bangkok's bustling streets lies a treasure trove of temples, each a testament to Thailand's rich cultural heritage. But with so many to choose from, finding the best ones can be overwhelming. That's where this article comes in. We'll be your guide, pointing you to the top temples worth visiting in Bangkok. From the iconic and popular Grand Palace to the serene Wat Pak Nam, we'll help you navigate the city's spiritual landmarks with ease. With our insider tips and recommendations, you'll embark on a memorable journey through Bangkok's temple-filled streets, discovering the beauty and tranquility they have to offer.

The Grand Palace

The Grand Palace

Despite being the most popular tourist spot in Bangkok, the Grand Palace's breathtaking beauty and historical significance make it an absolute must-see destination for travelers exploring the city. However, there are a couple of things to be wary of when visiting the iconic temple.

Firstly, beware of the infamous "Grand Palace is Closed '' scam by tuk-tuk drivers in the vicinity. While you are walking around the vicinity of the Grand Palace you will most likely be approached by tuk-tuk drivers that will tell you that “The Grand Palace is closed today”. They then proceed to tell you that they can take you to all these free temples for 20 to 40 Baht. What they don’t tell you is that they’ll actually take you to jewelry stores/tailor shops and pressure you to buy something. Don’t let these tuk-tuk drivers derail your plans, I assure you that the Grand Palace is not in fact closed.

Second, remember to dress appropriately according to the palace's strict dress code, ensuring that both shoulders and knees are covered, you will not be let in otherwise. If you find yourself in need of modest clothing, affordable options are available at shops just outside the palace gates. Once you have finished exploring the palace and its grounds to your heart's content, keep an eye out for the free shuttle bus near the exit, offering transportation to a captivating theatre show at 1 pm, 2:30 pm, and 4 pm. The show is included in your ticket to the palace and it's an opportunity not to be missed.

Wat Arun

Wat Arun

From the Grand Palace, head towards Tha Tien Pier, which is just a short walk away. At Tha Tien Pier, you'll find regular ferries that shuttle passengers across the river to Wat Arun Pier. Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn, is a striking sight along Bangkok's riverfront. With its tall spires covered in colorful ceramic tiles, it's hard to miss. When you climb up the central spire and reach the highest point, you will see the winding Chao Phraya River beneath and the Grand Palace and Wat Pho opposite. Take care when you climb because the steps are steep.

Wat Samphran

Wat Samphran

Wat Sam Phran, located 40 minutes away from Wat Arun, is a captivating temple renowned for its unique architecture. This extraordinary temple is adorned with a massive dragon coiled around its striking pink exterior, creating an unforgettable sight. Admission is donation-based, and you can climb to the top of the temple for the view and to see the dragon's head. The Gold Buddha building is a great place to capture a photo of the entire Dragon Temple. Beyond its exterior beauty, Wat Sam Phran offers serene surroundings for contemplation, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a blend of cultural richness and architectural beauty.

Wat Paknam

Wat Paknam

Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen temple, established in 1610 during the Ayutthaya period, stands as a testament to Thailand's rich cultural and religious heritage. At the heart of the temple complex resides a colossal Buddha statue, towering an impressive 69 meters tall and crafted entirely from bronze.

Behind the towering Buddha, lies the Maharatchamongkhon Stupa, gleaming white against the sky. Within its second floor, a museum awaits, housing a treasure trove of historic artifacts. Among them are Buddhist art pieces, serene Buddha images, elegant wooden furniture, delicate ceramics, and even vintage cars. However, the pinnacle of this experience awaits on the top floor, where a breathtaking sight unfolds. A mesmerizing psychedelic dome, adorned with an 8-meter-tall emerald glass stupa, containing Buddha relics and encircled by glass serpents at its base. This ethereal sanctuary offers a truly transcendent experience.

These four temples stand out for their beauty and history of Thailand's storied past and enduring traditions.
