Traveling with kids can be a challenge at the best of times, but in Mexico City, a huge metropolis with millions of inhabitants, it can be even more of a challenge. But with no shortage of things to do in Mexico City for kids, you can be sure that you and your little ones will enjoy a great day out. Even though things may seem logistically trickier in a massive city, with its open parks and natural spaces, cool museums and even theme parks, finding things to do is never a problem. We all know that occupied children make for peaceful parents, and luckily Mexico City is packed with great attractions and entertainment for families with children of all ages; making it a great city to explore with kids and teens. So check out my Mexico City for families guide, and you’ll find something for everyone in the family to enjoy - even the big kids (I mean you).
Papalote Museo del Niño
For younger children, like my toddler Mateo, the Papalote Museo del Niño is a great place to check out. A well-curated and fun museum located in the heart of Mexico City, in the Bosque de Chapultepec (forest), the Papalote Museo del Niño is perfect if you’re seeking activities in Mexico City with baby or Mexico City with a toddler. Home to an array of crafty and interactive exhibitions that could entertain every personality (even the most easily distracted), the museum is full of sections like “inside the body”, “cosmos”, “Mexico”, “my city”, “my family” and a really cool “lego” section. It's very much about learning as well as playing and entertaining. With learning, communication and working together at its heart, you can fully delve into the world of science, technology and art, and teach your kids about important topics in an interesting way.
Bosque de Chapultepec
Speaking of the Bosque de Chapultepec, that on its own is a great destination to head to with children. A huge open, green space at the heart of the city, Chapultepec Park (or Bosque de Chapultepec) is a cool area and great forest for visitors with families to enjoy. Home to a wide range of activities and attractions, such as an internationally renowned zoo, a Natural History Museum, a few lakeside restaurants, impressive monuments, fountains and areas for cultural exhibits, the spot is great for exploring with a picnic. There are plenty of gardens and green spaces with an interesting variety of flora and fauna to see, such as very tame squirrels who enjoy crackers and peanuts. A safe and calm ecological spot, you can easily spend a whole day exploring the grounds of the natural reserve. Enjoy the open air of one of the largest city parks in the Western Hemisphere, and soak up the natural vibe of one of the best free things to do in Mexico City.
Rancho Mágico
Enjoy quality family time at the Rancho Mágico; one of the biggest attractions of its kind in Mexico City for kids, with over six hectares of fun for all kinds of families. At the Rancho, your little ones can meet and interact with over a thousand animals, from reptiles to leopards to lemurs. Both children and adults alike can participate in interactive workshops, or play on one of the forty different attractions such as the carousel, inflatable games, a zip line, a magic maze and a water slide. Tailored to children of all ages, the whole family can enjoy time together at Rancho Mágico. Local families love the spot because, by the end of the day, your kids will be so sleepy after an energy-fuelled day in the open air! Evening bliss for the parents. An escape from the busy streets of the city, Rancho Mágico is the perfect family retreat for those wondering what to do in Mexico City with kids.
Six Flags México
Six Flags México is a well-known theme park located in the Tlalpan district of Mexico City. Rides at the 110-acre park include gentle children’s rides for younger children, family rides, and extreme thrills for older, more adventurous kids (and adults!) The park offers live shows and entertainment, several restaurants and carnival games. Drawing in a high crowd of locals and visitors wanting to spend a fun-filled family day in the city, Six Flags México is the perfect day-long destination where you can get involved in fun attractions like laser tag, bumper cars, Justice League-themed rides and even the world’s former largest piñata. The park is famed for its comic, cartoon and mythological character theme, and includes some mind-boggling rides. Adrenaline junkies will love the wooden roller coaster and the spinning Boomerang ride, while rides like Uncle Twisty’s Cabin, The Junior Rollercoaster and Turbo Bungy are great for those who like high speeds, twists and turns.
KidZania
KidZania is a really cool place to take your little and big ones. It’s a mini interactive representation of the city made for children between the ages of 2 and 14 that combines inspiration, fun and learning through realistic role-play. Kids can pretend to be adults as they independently explore a scaled city of over 7,000 square meters with more than 100 exciting careers that they can try. With real-life sponsors, KidZania has manufacturing companies, hospital, banks, service companies, government agencies, transportation companies, stores, and even an airline. All in which, kids can make money by working at, and then spend their unique KidZania currency on other activities. There are so many activities to try, that one visit alone couldn’t possibly exhaust them all. The Cuicuilco branch is easily accessible and full of fun exhibits and activities to get stuck in to. KidZania really gives children the opportunity to let their imaginations run wild, while you get a breather from the madness of taking children on holiday.
