Explore Kyoto's instagrammable bamboo grove, wander through traditional Machiya houses, and uncover hidden gem temples.
Here’s everything you need to know before your day unfolds.
I have made this experience so that you may really feel Kyoto’s history and rich culture. I hope you will understand why it is one of my favorite places ever, you may even agree. Traditional Machiya houses, temples and delicacies await you on this unforgettable hosted experience.
Starting at Arashiyama train station you’re going to be straight into the wonders as you stroll through the beautiful Arashiyama Bamboo forest. It’s not hard to see why it is one of the most photographed spots in the city, it certainly was an Instagram focal point during my trip. The towering bamboo and torii tunnels feel other worldly and the temples provide stories and vistas that could honestly keep you there all day. Fortunately your host will keep your timing on track, else you might just stay.
You’re moving onto a location I felt was like stepping back in time, Saga Torrimoto. A peaceful street lined with traditional machiya wooden houses and beautiful gardens. Your host will share more but it's a real glimpse into the Meiji-period merchant towns of the past. Be careful here, some of the houses ask for no photography so please be respectful. I promise there are plenty of places for epic photos during this experience.
So, go take some photos at the Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple. There is a lot to take in here but take a moment to appreciate the thousands of carved stone statues, ask your host what they are placed there to commemorate! Top tip: I found the stretch of bamboo forest here to be a little quieter and a perfect spot for photos, your host will help you get the best angles.
Next, I want you to visit a real hidden gem. Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple, is a Buddhist temple from the 8th century. Learn about its unfortunate history and marvel at more than 1,000 statues. I don’t want to spoil it for you but you may be older than some of these statues. See if you can spot the statue with a tennis racket, another with an old portable cassette player and more fun additions. This one was a real highlight for me.
Ok, you’ve been busy so far so I think it’s time to eat. I’ve planned for you to try authentic Japanese cuisine at this Kyoto-style restaurant. Remove your shoes and sit cross legged on cushions placed around a low table. You’ll enjoy the local flavors, learn about their origins all accompanied by picturesque views of the river and trees across the gorge. Let me know what food you enjoyed the most please.
I feel sad to say, this experience has come to an end. I hope Kyoto has wowed you as much as it did me. I immediately fell in love with this place and cannot wait to go back. I hope you have many days left to go and explore further, we’ve covered the best of the hidden gems but there are so many more.

Alex was a fantastic tour guide who we greatly enjoyed as our leader around Kyoto. He was very knowledgeable of the historical significance of many parts of the city, and he also provided us with access to hidden gems that we would have not uncovered on our own. He planned a perfect day around Kyoto with visits to all the spots on our list.
Show moreA very well thought out walking tour that made all the differences. Ada was a wonderful guide for us! She knew what tour was appropriate for our abilities and limitations. We got to see some amazing sites while avoiding the massive crowds. We got to see a more intimate part of Kyoto and even got to enjoy the bamboo forest! What made this tour even more special was the fact that she spoke three languages - Spanish, English and Japanese! Which made our group very excited as we spoke English and Spanish. But we were also learning Japanese. Jackpot! When we return we hope she will be our tour guide again to discover other beautiful areas.
Show moreGreat tour around Kyoto from Ryuki, a guy who grew up here and knows many Kyoto tour hacks! He has excellent English, and sought what our preferences were before setting out on our tour. Highly recommend.

Show moreMilo our guide was amazing. He went out of his way to ensure our private tour was filled with the history of beautiful Kyoto. We went to several temples and Japanese gardens which all were spectacular. Kudos to Milo. I highly recommend a private tour.
