Kyoto like a local: From ancient temples and enchanting culture to bustling markets
Here’s everything you need to know before your day unfolds.
Welcome to Kyoto! A city where you can time travel between ancient temples and modern marvels. Explore centuries-old streets, attend a traditional tea ceremony, or even check out the latest tech! You can experience the best of both worlds in Kyoto and that’s exactly what we love about it! We’ve designed this experience to take in the best of what we found, it’s an incredible introduction to a city with so much depth. There is so much that may take your fancy, we’ve stripped out prescribed budgets so that you can pay as you go, as much or as little, in the markets and stalls you will visit.
We’ve pieced together an unforgettable journey that dives deep into the city's heart, showcasing spots that stole our hearts and stories we can’t wait for you to discover. Led by a local host who’s got all the insider info, you’re set for an experience that’s as genuine as it is unforgettable.
Kick off your day at Fushimi Inari Taisha, famous for its seemingly endless path of vermilion Torii Gates. You’ll have no doubt seen this place in photographs, maybe ours? As you take a steady hike up, look out for the little fox statues - messengers of gods, and supposedly they’re good luck! Your host can help you bank all the luck you can on the way up - we hope it works for you. Catching your breath at the summit isn’t just for the fit - it’s for anyone who loves a good view.
Don’t be surprised that when you get to the top you’re starting to feel a bit hungry. That’s exactly why your host will lead you to your next stop, Nishiki Market. This is a lively alley where the energy is as palpable as the smell of fresh takoyaki - a local favorite. Speaking of which, you cannot miss out on Karikari Hakase’s octopus balls; they’re out of this world! If you’re craving something sweet then our go-to is always a mochi topped with a juicy strawberry. It’s the kind of snack that makes shopping twice as fun. Your host will point you to the best stalls, help you order and share little tidbits that aren’t in your average guidebook.
As you wander through Hanamikoji Street, keep your eyes peeled for geishas leaving one of the many tea houses or restaurants that line this location. This old street is perfect for photos, and perhaps if you’re lucky, you’ll even get a wave or smile out of these elusive figures. Even if you go without, this is truly a magical location with lots of hidden treasures, behind facades that only your host will know where to look - a real insider's treat.
You’re then off to Hōkan-ji Temple. While you might perhaps just see this stunning architectural marvel from the outside, it is still awe-inspiring and there is so much to take in. Your host will guide you to the Yasaka Pagoda Photograph Spot where you will get insane views and those gorgeous insta-worthy shots! If you’re feeling a bit peckish then we can’t help but recommend trying matcha tiramisu at Maccha House. Honestly, it is so good that it almost feels wrong!
As the day winds down, you’ll head on over to Kiyomizu-dera temple. This place is steeped in history, and the view from the Stage of Kiyomize is like stepping into a classic Japanese painting. Your host will help you navigate the temple grounds and perhaps share a story or two about the temple's past. You’ll want to spend a long time here but you must keep moving, there is more to see.
As evening hits, Yasaka Shrine is where you’ll see Kyoto in a different light - literally. The shrine’s evening illuminations are quiet but stunning. It’s a peaceful way to wind down before dinner. Your host can help you find the best viewing spot, of course with the best photo angles.
Speaking of dinner, no trip to Kyoto is complete without trying the okonomiyaki at Gion Tanto. It’s our go-to spot, and we’ve never had a meal here that didn’t leave us planning our next one. If you're up for it, why not snag yourself a sample of the amazing okonomiyaki here, it's reasonably priced and definitely highly recommended. P.s bring cash for this.
End your day with an informative and enjoyable stroll down Shirakawa Lane. This is a stunning street all year round but it is especially beautiful when it is cherry blossom season. Be sure to visit just after dark to experience the lantern-lit path and the quiet of the evening make it a perfect ending to your Kyoto adventure.
This isn’t just any experience, this is a chance to see Kyoto through the eyes of those who’ve wandered its paths and loved its corners. We love to hear from those who have enjoyed our experiences, please do share with us your best bits and don’t delay - Kyoto is waiting for you to discover its stories!

We both really enjoyed our trip to Kyoto which Michael made very special. We saw and learnt way more about Kyoto and Japanese life, history and culture than we could ever have done on our own. And we loved the lunch!
Show moreGreat experience. Knowledgeable. With so many tourists in Kyoto, he saved us time by knowing the shortcuts to viewing the major attractions. He helped us find items we wanted to purchase. Planned out and very efficient. Well worth the money. It would have taken us hours more to cover the same ground on our own.
Show moreIt was very nice and so informative, we learned so much and Alexis was great! Nothing that we can think of should be improved :)
Show moreWhat a marvelous tour! Our guide Toga was knowledgeable, adaptable and charming. An absolute treat. Once he met us he shifted where we would visit and selected stunning, less crowded Temples that were more off the beaten track. His explanations were so interesting. The thousand Buddhas at the Sanjusangendo Temple (no photos but I bought a book and some postcards) were just amazing and the Zen Temple of Kennin-ji was serene and lovely. Togo made sure we had time to sit and be (and we managed to get up too:) Amazing. He then took us to a shopping street (we had asked) and he also showed us a number of vegetarian restaurants (i am a vegetarian) He explained where to flag a taxi. We took taxis all day today and it really took the pressure off.
Show moreToga was an excellent guide! We arrived 30 minutes late due to our cab driver having trouble with the address and Toga was very understanding- and extended our tour to the full 4 hours. We learned so much about the temples we visited, about the religion, about life in Japan, and about any other topic we were interested in. Toga was very relaxed, answered all of our questions, suggested things for us to do during the remainder of our time in Kyoto and he also educated us on Buddhism. Our tour was relaxed, informative, and we would highly recommend Toga as a guide!
Show moreAda planned a lovely excursion for us to the temples and gardens west of Kyoto, taking into account our interests in culture, nature and meditation. We were able to visit sites before they got busy or off the beaten path seeing beautiful sites while avoiding crowds altogether. She enlightened us with historical and cultural details that made everything quite fascinating. Wonderful!
