What you’ll do

So, we know that night markets are meant to be about food, but the bustling stalls, arcades, and neon lights draw us in like moths to a flame. Join one of our local Taipei hosts and visit arguably two of the best night markets in Taipei.

We love a good contrast, so the catch is that the first, Ningxia, is more of a spectacle filled with gaming stalls and bright city lights. Whereas the second, Yansan, is a real local den - no-frills, no tourists, just authentic, tasty food that will blow you away.

Start in Ningxia, famous for its oyster omelets, and other traditional staples like noodles fried over blazing flames, gua bao, and giant chicken chops. We hope your waistbands are stretchy because next your host will take you to Yansan (just a short walk away), where we challenge you to try some stinky tofu.

Your host will ensure you try these Taiwanese delicacies at the very best vendors. Chat to them about the food culture here, and ask any questions you may have about exotic ingredients you might never have seen.

Afterward, you can head home and blissfully slip into a food coma.

Roro was an amazing guide. We were shown such interesting people and foods. The night market was a maze and Roro guided us through with ease. So many different foods to choose from. She explained everything as well as the different customs and things we saw. She was a perfect leader. Roro answered all of our questions and made the experience one to always remember. She is a treasure and a definite perfect addition to Viator. We would wish her to be our guide in the future. 10 out of 10

Roro was a most excellent guide. She knew so many special places and foods. She gave us insights into local cultures and customs. We couldn't have wished for a better person to introduce us to Taiwanese foods. She is a treasure. Next visit we will request her to guide us again.

Alice contacted us before our tour and made suggestions as far as our options to get to Songshan from our hotel. She was in constant contact making sure that we can find each other easily. Alice asked us what we liked, made recommendations as far as the different foods, talked with the vendors to make sure we weren’t getting cheated. We found her to be personable, considerate and pleasant to be with. I’d highly recommend Alice and this tour. It would be hard to go to the night market alone and not be able to communicate with the vendors. Plus if you want to buy anything you need to bring Taiwan dollars.

Alice took us off track to the electronics shopping malls by special request. We then went to the night food market. She explained the foods to us. We tried some classics like stinky tofu, oyster omelette and pork bun. Nothing was too much trouble. Alice was very generous and could not do more to make our food sampling memorable. We popped into a local temple and she explained to tradition. We also managed a sneaky light display on the river front. I would highly recommend Alice as a guide.

I highly recommend the City Unscripted approach to private tours. We were not surrounded by other tourists, and we got a true taste of the city with a knowledgeable and friendly local guide.
