How New York City Was Born

When I lived in New York, I was constantly struck by how alive the history of the city felt. Every block and every neighbourhood seemed to have its own story. Each adding a layer to the ever-evolving character of this incredible place.

That's what makes New York, well, New York.

It's a city where the past and the present are intertwined in the most fascinating ways.

The Origins of New York

The Origins of New York

Let's start with the origins of New York, a story that begins with a transaction that was, quite frankly, a bit of a misunderstanding.

In 1626, the Dutch "purchased" the island of Manhattan from the Native Americans, for goods worth around 60 guilders. The Dutch saw this as a real estate deal, while the Native Americans likely viewed it as a more symbolic gesture, not realizing the permanent change this would signify.

From this point, Manhattan became a strategic Dutch trading post known as New Amsterdam.

This bustling little hub quickly grew, attracting traders, settlers, and a mix of cultures that began to shape the city’s unique identity. In 1664, the British seized control without much resistance, renaming it New York in honour of the Duke of York.

This marked the beginning of New York’s transformation into a British colony.

The American Revolution

Lower Manhattan played a crucial role in the American Revolution. It was the site of intense political activity and key battles.

As you walk along Wall Street or Stone Street today, you can almost hear the echoes of revolutionary charge and imagine the bustling atmosphere of a city on the brink of a new nation.

The Grid System

The Grid System

One of the most interesting aspects of Lower Manhattan is its street layout. Unlike the rest of Manhattan, which follows a strict grid system, Lower Manhattan’s streets are a maze of narrow, winding lanes.

This is a legacy of the city's earliest days when the layout was influenced more by the terrain and less by urban planning.

The Financial Centre of the World

The Financial Centre of the World

Take Wall Street, for instance. Originally, this street marked the northern boundary of New Amsterdam, where the Dutch built a wall to protect their settlement from potential invaders.

Fast forward a few centuries, and Wall Street has become the financial heart of the world, home to the New York Stock Exchange and the world’s biggest financial institutions.

Walking through these streets, you can’t help but feel the weight of history. Every building, every corner has a story to tell. From the Dutch settlers to the British colonists, from revolutionaries to modern-day finance executives, the history of New York is written in its very cobbled streets.
