From witches and plagues to ghosts that are said to haunt the city still, Edinburgh has a ton of dark and fascinating history. There’s a reason this stunning place served as the inspiration or backdrop to so many books, TV shows, and movies (Harry Potter, anyone?) It’s no wonder JK Rowling wrote most of the earlier part of the series in Edinburgh - it’s one of the most beautiful cities to sip some tea and write about teenage witches and warlocks.
I have set this half-day experience up to ensure you learn about all this and even more. So let’s go back in time and discover what Edinburgh was like centuries ago as your host takes you on the highlight reel of Edinburgh’s best. They’ll be sure to tell you about the little secrets and hidden gems at these 5 must-see spots in this city while pointing out all the witchy things along the way. It’s sure to make your day that much more special.
Starting off with a bang, we're at the magnificent Edinburgh Castle. Perched at the top of Castle Rock, this ancient fortress is the city's crown jewel. As you approach, the grandeur of the castle's stone walls is awe-inspiring and even a bit intimidating. Once inside, don't miss the Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny – the history here is almost tangible. And, if you’re lucky, you might catch the One O'Clock Gun firing – it’s a blast, quite literally!
Next up, head down to Victoria Street, and oh boy, is this a treat! This curving, cobbled street is like stepping into a fairytale. The colorful, quirky shops are the perfect spot to find some unique souvenirs, so be sure to bring an extra suitcase. Pop into "The Elephant House" café, famously known as the birthplace of Harry Potter. I adore the cheese shop here – the aromas alone are worth the visit. Walking down this street, you'll feel like you've been transported to another era.
A short stroll from Victoria Street brings you to Greyfriars Kirkyard. This place is not just any old cemetery – it's packed with stories. The most heartwarming is that of Greyfriars Bobby, the loyal dog who guarded his master's grave for 14 years. There’s a statue of Bobby nearby, and giving his nose a rub is said to bring good luck. As you wander among the old, weathered gravestones, you might recognize some names that inspired J.K. Rowling's characters. It’s spooky and charming all at once!
From the Kirkyard, you’ll make your way to the Scott Monument in Princes Street Gardens. This Gothic rocket is a tribute to Sir Walter Scott, and if you're up for it, the climb to the top offers unbeatable views of the city. As you ascend, the narrow staircases can be a bit of a squeeze, so watch your head. It’s hard to enjoy the stunning panoramic views with a concussion. I love just sitting on the nearby benches, marveling at this intricate structure against the backdrop of bustling Princes Street.
Finally, you’ll arrive at Princes Street Gardens, a green oasis in the heart of the city. These gardens stretch along Princes Street, providing a peaceful escape from the urban hustle. The floral clock is a delightful sight, and the gardens are ablaze in the summer with colorful blooms. This is a perfect spot for a picnic, with the majestic Edinburgh Castle looming above. I can spend hours here, just people-watching and soaking in the serene ambiance.
As you wrap up your little experience, I hope you've fallen in love with Edinburgh as much as I have. Each stop is a gem, brimming with history, charm, and a dash of magic. Until your next adventure!
