Six Very Different Bars in Brussels

Prepare to embark on a captivating journey through Brussels' diverse bar scene, where we'll unveil the unique charm of six distinct establishments. From hidden gems tucked away in historic alleyways to bustling hubs at the heart of the city, each bar offers its own special ambiance and cultural significance. Join us as we introduce you to these six remarkable venues, each promising a memorable experience and a glimpse into the soul of Brussels.

Poechenellekelder

Poechenellekelder

Perfectly situated near the famous Manneken Pis statue, Poechenellekelder boasts one of the most beautiful outdoor decorations, with colorful bicycles adorning its walls. Inside, you'll find a charming puppet-filled decor, adding to its whimsical charm.

Plaques on the tables mark the names of famous people who have sat there. While the inviting atmosphere might tempt you to sit and enjoy your beer, don't miss the downstairs area. This hidden gem shines as you get there, revealing a scene of puppetry, a nod to the bar's history as a puppet theatre.

Halles Saint-Géry

Halles Saint-Géry

Previously a covered marketplace built in 1881, Halles Saint-Géry is now a trendy bar in Brussels. Besides offering a variety of beers, this neo-Renaissance building hosts exhibitions, events, and live music in the evenings, highlighting the city’s rich heritage and contemporary art scene.

While Brussels has many historic bars, drinking in a former market provides a unique vibe. Don’t miss the vibrant bar atmosphere, and be sure to check out the quirky Zinneke Pis statue, the famous pissing dog of Brussels, nearby!

Delirium

Delirium

Famous for holding the Guinness World Record in 2004 for offering the most different beers, Delirium Village had 2,004 beers at the time. Today, they feature a wide array of beers from around the world and continue to introduce new ones annually. My favorite is Deliria, a beer crafted entirely by women. Although it’s typically available around March 8th, it’s worth seeking out.

This bar is perfect for trying a beer meter (often referred to as a beer flight). Don't forget to check the map at the entrance to navigate this sprawling venue, as it indicates which sections serve which types of drinks. And be sure to see Janneken Pis, the "pissing girl" statue, right at its door!

Le Cercueil

Le Cercueil

True to its name (which means coffins), Le Cercueil is a spooky bar. While the Halloween-themed decorations give it a bit of a teenage vibe, the presence of real, old wooden coffins adds an authentic macabre and eerie atmosphere. It may cost a few extra euros to get your beer in skeleton-shaped glasses, but there's no doubt it's worth it!

La Bécasse Bar

La Bécasse Bar

Nestled near Brussels' iconic Grand Place, invites patrons into a nostalgic Belgian haven. Its wooden interiors and warm lighting evoke a bygone era, setting the stage for an enchanting experience.

What sets La Bécasse apart is its themed play nights, where guests can indulge in the thrill of casino games like roulette and blackjack. These evenings, coupled with live music performances by local artists, create a dynamic fusion of culture and entertainment.

But the excitement doesn't end there – beer game competitions add a spirited challenge, ensuring there's never a dull moment. With its vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings, La Bécasse promises an unforgettable adventure with each visit.

Royal Theatre Toone

Royal Theatre Toone

Drink right next to a puppet theatre scene or in front of a puppet at Royal Theatre Toone. This historic puppet theatre and bar, nestled in the heart of Brussels, was established in 1830 by Antoine "Toone" Genty.

For nearly two centuries, it has been a cornerstone of Brussels' cultural life. Unlike other theatre bars mentioned in this article, Toone still operates as a puppet theatre, hosting performances once a week to keep the tradition alive. On other days, you can enjoy a beer in this unique setting.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with the bar's historic setting providing a unique backdrop that transports you to a bygone era. Wooden benches and the intimate stage add to the nostalgic charm, making it a perfect spot to relax and soak in the cultural ambiance.

As our tour of Brussels' iconic bars comes to a close, we hope you've savored the rich flavors and storied histories of each establishment. Whether you're drawn to the traditional allure of centuries-old taverns or the vibrant energy of modern hotspots, the city's bar scene offers something truly special for every palate and preference. Cheers to the memories made and the adventures yet to come in the heart of Belgium's capital!
