The best Madrid private food tours & experiences

Madrid has recently joined the ranks as one of Europe’s culinary capitals for good reason: it’s the place to find authentic, typical Spanish food in all its forms. Each Spanish village has its own specialties, and Madrid is the city that neatly packages them in one vibrant place. For locals, eating at restaurants in Madrid is almost always a joyful, convivial event that deserves dedicated hours every day. The city has no shortage of gastronomic greats – the best restaurants in Madrid are also some of the finest in the world – but it’s the traditional tapas bars and hearty feasts shared under centuries-old ceilings that make dining here such a delight.

Not your typical tapas

In Madrid, tapas is part of the fabric of society, a national pastime ingrained into the city’s culture. With so many of the best restaurants in Madrid being traditional tapas bars, choosing the right place for these small plates of pure Spanish delight can be daunting. Whether you head to an old-school, down-to-earth tapas bar for classic, century-old Spanish snacks like patatas bravas and Iberian ham, or watch the world go by at a sleek, upmarket bar for a more global take on traditional tapas, this unique slice of the Spanish food experience is a must-have in its capital city.

From homestyle cooking to super-hip cuisine

In Madrid, the local culinary staples (fried cod, snails, oxtail) prepared to perfection are readily available around every corner. Many of the best restaurants in Madrid serve homely delights like garlic soup, hearty stews, and wood-fired meats – the type of food that feels like a comforting embrace. But it’s not all traditional fare: a whirlwind of exciting new flavors can be found across restaurants in Madrid. The new generation of chefs has ushered in trendy Asian fusion food, experimental tasting menus, and upmarket restaurants doing riffs on the city’s culinary classics.

Spain in one city

Cities throughout Spain have their own surprisingly varied regional cuisines, from paella in Valencia to the hearty casseroles of Cataluña. But all six of Spain’s national roads lead to a marker in the heart of Madrid dubbed “Kilometer Zero”, so it’s no surprise restaurants in Madrid have naturally evolved into a combination of styles and flavors from all across the country. The restaurants in Madrid are the most diverse in Spain, allowing you to eat food from virtually every region – whether you try the sauces and seafood of Galicia the simple sautéed peppers from the Pyrenees.

Latest reviews from our guests

We had a wonderful time exploring the city with Lisa. Very professional and knowledgeable. We went back to one of the tapas places she introduced to us because we enjoyed it so much! Really tasty food (croquettas and stuffed mushrooms were the best!)

Not only did we learn about the tapas culture, how to order, where to eat them, we also saw different parts of the city and heard personal stories from Ricardo. His English was excellent, and he was very knowledgeable about Madrid and Spain. We highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore Madrid.

Joanna was our guide and she was fantastic! My son and I found her so easy to get along with. She was very friendly, knowledgeable of the history of the various barrios we walked through, and she turned us on to some some fantastic food and drink treats. Her organization, CityUnscripted, has a real gem of a person/tour guide in Joanna.
