Bangkok is a massive city with countless neighbourhoods to explore. You can spend years in this city, and still not even scratch the surface. Today I’ll be introducing you to Thonglor, the trendiest neighbourhood in Bangkok.
Prior to World War II, Thonglor was mainly inhabited by the Thai navy and somewhat of a rural area. Today it is an area filled to the brim with eateries, shopping malls, speakeasies, and sky bars this neighbourhood has grown exponentially.
Well connected to the rest of Bangkok by the BTS Skytrain, and with close proximity to the Asoke area, Thonglor has become a popular spot for many expats. Let’s dive into some of my favourite spots in this part of the city.
1. The Commons Thonglor
One of my favorite places to eat and relax in Bangkok is The Commons. This indoor/outdoor eatery and co-working space is dog-friendly with chill vibes. It’s easy to meet other expats here while enjoying coffee and lunch. My top food recommendations are the beefcake sandwich from Crackhouse and the falafel pita from Baba Shuk.
2. Marche Thonglor
This shopping mall is an architectural dream with its outdoor, curving skywalk and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. It is full of plants and greenery that fit well in the modern tropical vibe. You can find plenty of shops, restaurants, and grocery stores inside.
3. Flat + White Cafe
Nestled in a soi (narrow side street) off of the main road, Flat + White is one of the most Instagrammable cafes I’ve ever seen. The floor, ceiling, furniture, and seating are entirely white and very modern. You’ll definitely want to have your camera ready to snap some shots here. The coffee here is excellent, and their baked goods are a comforting pick-me-up.
4. Tichuca Rooftop Bar
Everyone who’s someone is talking about this rooftop bar, and for good reason! Tichuca is known for its giant rooftop light-up tree that looks something like a neon jellyfish. It makes an iconic backdrop for a fun night out. The cocktails here are one of a kind, and the atmosphere is full of energy. You’ll find locals, expats, and tourists alike here.
5. #findthelockerroom
Hidden away in a small alley behind an unassuming wall of beat-up lockers, this speakeasy is the perfect place to end a night out. The bar is cozy and intimate, with a large menu of signature cocktails. The bartenders here are top-notch and will provide catered drink recommendations to suit every taste.
You can reach Thonglor by jumping on the BTS Skytrain and alighting at Thonglor station. A quick walk down the main road here will leave you wanting to return time and time again.
