Imagine standing on a rooftop gazing at the Eiffel Tower as the sun sets, trolling through centuries-old gardens that have witnessed the footsteps of kings and poets, and wandering along picturesque canals where locals relax and enjoy the day. These are the moments that make Paris unforgettable. Its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture make it a magical place where there is always something new to discover.

And while Paris is often seen as an expensive city, some of its most enchanting experiences are completely free. From breathtaking panoramic views and hidden literary treasures to serene gardens and charming waterways, the city offers countless ways to explore and enjoy its beauty without spending a dime.

Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, here are some free attractions that dprovide you with a deeper connection to the heart and soul of the city, making your visit truly unforgettable. 

The Rooftop at the Galeries Lafayette

Address: 40 Boulevard Haussmann, 75009 Paris

Perched atop one of the most iconic stores in Paris, the rooftop at the Galeries Lafayette offers one of the best panoramic views of the city. From here, you can take in stunning vistas of both the Eiffel Tower and the Opéra Garnier, it is definitely a must-visit. Accessible during the store's regular business hours—typically Monday to Saturday from 9:30 AM to 8:30 PM, and Sunday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM—you simply take the escalators all the way to the top floor, step out onto the terrace, and prepare to be amazed.

The sight of the iconic Parisian skyline, with its blend of historic and modern architecture, is truly breathtaking. I remember my first time on this rooftop—it was just before sunset, and the sky was painted in shades of pink and orange. It’s moments like these that make Paris so special. 

Pro Tip: Restrooms here are free :) 

The Bibliotheque National at Richelieu-Louvois

Address: 5 Rue Vivienne, 75002 Paris

Nestled in the heart of the city, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France is one of the most stunning libraries in Paris. It is a haven for book lovers and history buffs, with reading rooms that truly feel like stepping back in time. Walking through the grand halls of this library, you can almost hear the whispers of centuries of scholars.

The Oval Room, with its magnificent dome and endless rows of books, is particularly enchanting. Take a moment to sit and soak in the ambience, letting the rich history inspire you. It’s a place where you can easily lose yourself in the world of books and the stories they hold. You might even find yourself inspired to jot down thoughts and reflections as you bask in the library’s timeless charm.

Pro Tip: Try to arrive early as this spot can be quite busy as Parisians seek a calm place to study. 

Parisian Gardens

As beautiful as the architecture in Paris is, sometimes you need a break from the bustling city. Thankfully, Paris holds many enchanting gardens and green spaces, each offering its own unique charm and beauty. Of course, even these gardens reflect the full splendor that is the French capital. Here are four of my favorite:

Jardin du Luxembourg (15 Rue de Vaugirard, 75006 Paris)
Nestled in the heart of the city, the Jardin du Luxembourg is a true gem. With its sprawling lawns, vibrant flowerbeds, and the serene Medici Fountain, itt's more than just a garden; it's a haven where locals and visitors alike can relax and unwind. Even better, this garden is located in beautiful part of the city with iconic landmarks like the Pantheon and Saint-Sulpice church located just a short walk away. 

Jardin du Palais Royal (6 Rue de Montpensier, 75001 Paris)
Although smaller in size, the Jardin du Palais Royal exudes timeless elegance. Its peaceful arcades, meticulously trimmed hedges, and soothing atmosphere make it a favorite among Parisians seeking a moment of tranquility. Walking through its shaded pathways feels like stepping into a secret garden, even though it’s located in one of the busiest parts of the city. 

Jardin des Tuileries (Between the Louvre Museum and Place de la Concorde)
Steeped in history, the Jardin des Tuileries stretches gracefully between the Louvre Museum and Place de la Concorde. Once the private playground of French royalty, today it welcomes visitors to wander through its perfectly manicured French gardens, dotted with sculptures that whisper tales of bygone eras. It's a place where art, history, and nature harmoniously converge.

Jardin des Plantes (57 Rue Cuvier, 75005 Paris)
Nestled along the banks of the Seine, Jardin des Plantes isn’t just a garden—it’s a sanctuary where Paris’s natural beauty and scientific curiosity converge. As the city’s principal botanical garden, it offers a serene escape from urban life, inviting visitors to wander through lush greenery and vibrant floral displays. It is even home to a variety of museums and the oldest public zoo in France. 

Pro Tip: Visit early in the morning to experience the garden's tranquil atmosphere before it gets busy. This is the perfect time to appreciate the peaceful beauty of the plants and enjoy the exhibits without the crowds.

Canal Saint-Martin

Address: 45 Quai de Jemmapes, 75010 Paris

While Paris is famous for the iconic Seine River, the Canal Saint-Martin offers a quieter, more laid-back waterside experience that’s beloved by locals and visitors alike. This picturesque waterway winds through trendy neighborhoods, adorned with charming boutiques, cozy cafes, and elegant iron footbridges. It's one of my favorite spots to soak in the Parisian ambiance.

On sunny days, you'll find people relaxing along the canal’s edge, enjoying picnics or simply watching the boats pass by. As evening falls, the canal area transforms into a lively hub of activity, creating a vibrant atmosphere that’s quintessentially Parisian.

Pro tip: I recommend starting at the Canal’s southern end and walking north until the Square des Maures

The Covered Passages of Paris

While the exact number of passages remains a mystery, Paris boasts between 20 to 30 of these hidden gems, each offering a delightful glimpse into the city’s storied past. Wandering through them, you'll feel like a true Parisian, uncovering each passageway’s character and charm. Here are some of my favorites:

Passage des Panoramas
One of the oldest covered passages in Paris, dating back to 1799. It's renowned for its historic charm, gourmet restaurants, and antique shops.

Passage Jouffroy 
Located near the Grands Boulevards, Passage Jouffroy is famous for its ornate decor, including a glass roof and intricate ironwork. It houses delightful boutiques, quaint cafes, and the Musée Grévin.

Galerie Vivienne 
Known for its elegant architecture with mosaic floors, glass ceilings, and upscale shops. Galerie Vivienne exudes a timeless beauty and is a popular spot for shopping and dining.

Passage Choiseul 
A quieter passage with a more relaxed atmosphere, featuring artisan shops, bookstores, and charming cafes. It's appreciated for its authentic Parisian ambiance.

Passage Verdeau 
Adjacent to Passage Jouffroy, Passage Verdeau is beloved for its antique dealers, vintage shops, and picturesque setting. It's quieter than some of the more famous passages but equally enchanting.

Passage du Grand Cerf
Known for its impressive iron and glass roof, Passage du Grand Cerf offers a blend of modern boutiques and traditional craftsmanship, making it a favorite for both locals and tourists.
