Anyone who is reading this blog has probably been bitten by the travel bug. For some of us, travel is not something we do just to relax. True travelers want more than a pristine white beach and a drink with an umbrella in it. (Though, hey, those kind of vacations can sometimes be nice too!)
No...a true traveler is someone who wants to immerse themselves into a culture and experience it through the senses of a local. They want to eat the foods the locals eat, see the sites that have nothing to do with sightseeing or tourism, and experience shopping, entertainment, and even everyday life the way a person who lives there would. In essence, a true traveler wants to become a part of the landscape they are visiting. Even if just for a few moments in time.
Like you, I was bit by the travel bug early in my life. It has been something that I don't just check off my bucket list.Travel is a part of who I am, and learning about other people and places and cultures is an integral part of learning about myself. When I first came to Tokyo it was going to be for a short period of time. Years later, I still live in the most populated city in the world, the city that is as diverse in culture as it is rich in history.Though the travel bug still bites at me and reminds me to keep exploring, Tokyo has centered me and allowed for me to find a place to call home.
As someone who now calls myself a Tokyo local, I find immense joy in sharing its wonders with others when they come to visit. Whether it's your first trip to my host city or you've been here more times than you can count, Tokyo is a treasure trove of hidden gems, famed sites, and home to some of the best restaurants and shopping experiences in the world.
From its modern skyscrapers to its serene gardens, quirky neighborhoods, and unforgettable food scene, Tokyo truly holds something for everyone. But...that can also be a part of the challenge when you visit this fabulously frenetic city.

With so much to do and see and experience, Tokyo can feel a bit overwhelming to some. Even the best Tokyo travel guidebook - like Lonely Planet Tokyo or Let's Go Tokyo - may not be able to give you the type of itinerary that can help ensure you hit all the hot spots, but also have an experience that is tailored to some of your specific desires and interests.
For example, let's say you're a big foodie (like me) and want to visit Tokyo in large part for its world-renowned food scene. A good travel guide will be able to help you uncover some of the best places in Tokyo to enjoy excellent Japanese cuisine. But if you're a true foodie (like me!) you'll want to explore more than just the 5-star Michelin restaurants that Tokyo is known for or the latest restaurant that just opened.
You'll want to find the hole-in-the-wall shop that only has six seats but serves the best ramen known to man. You'll want to find the one quirky little izakaya alleyway that fills fast after 5 o'clock and it's rare to hear a word of English spoken while you navigate your way through it. You'll want to try street food and know that not only will it be the least expensive meal you eat but possibly the most unforgettable as well.
Tokyo's food scene is a treasure trove of culinary delights, a mecca for food lovers seeking extraordinary experiences. If food is your way of experiencing a new culture, then what is offered as "insider tips" and "honest reviews" in the hundreds of Guide to Tokyo books is not going to be enough for you. You'll need a local guide who will understand how you want to experience the city and weave your interests into the fabric of everything you do while experiencing it. And this isn't just the case for food culture connoisseurs.
Are you a history buff who won't be able to enjoy Tokyo city without peeling back the past and exploring all that was here long before Shibuya Crossing and Tokyo Skytree? Is your love for nature so deep that you can't wait to spend time in the city's gardens, view Mount Fuji and Tokyo Bay, and make sure to be able to experience Cherry Blossom season? Do you come alive at night and want to spend your time navigating Golden Gai, sitting with locals who only speak Japanese, and find the hidden izakayas that even the best Tokyo travel guide still hasn't found?
Whether your interest lies with food and drink, history and sightseeing, shopping, and entertainment, or seeing the natural beauty of a spot, personalized day trips with a local can be the best way to really understand a city like Tokyo. Japan is a beautiful country with a rich history that captivates the imagination. From its majestic snow-capped mountains to its serene cherry blossom gardens, Japan's landscapes are a harmonious blend of natural wonders and carefully cultivated spaces.
But beyond the physical beauty, it is the spirit of Japan that truly enchants—a spirit of resilience, respect, and the pursuit of perfection. And these values are seen clearly in Tokyo, particularly if you explore it with a person who can truly appreciate how ancient traditions coexist harmoniously with cutting-edge technology, and where every corner reveals a new adventure waiting to be discovered.

Itinerary #2: For the Fashionista in All of Us
Let's face it...all of us have a bit of a fashion maven somewhere inside of us, right? Fashion has long been a way that humans express their individuality, their social status, and what they value most in life.
Some people prefer haute couture fashion and will happily pay top dollar to own the latest styles and trends. Brand names are important to them, as is following the latest fashion news and they don't mind who knows it. Others express their relationship with fashion in a very different way. They may prefer to shop in second-hand clothing stores or vintage clothing shops.
For these individuals, repurposing and recreating is more important than the latest look and they find joy in the uniqueness and stories behind each piece they wear. They embrace the thrill of the hunt, scouring thrift shops and flea markets to discover hidden gems that reflect their personal style and stand out from the crowd. Vintage fashion allows them to connect with bygone eras and bring a touch of nostalgia to their wardrobe.
And then there are those who prioritize comfort and functionality above all else. They gravitate towards minimalistic and practical designs that seamlessly blend fashion with everyday life. For them, fashion is a tool to enhance their day-to-day activities, and they appreciate clothing that allows them to move freely and effortlessly.
Regardless of the approach, fashion in Tokyo caters to every taste and inclination. The city is renowned for its eclectic street fashion, where avant-garde styles, bold colors, and experimental combinations take center stage. Tokyo's vibrant fashion districts like Harajuku and Shibuya are a playground for those who dare to push boundaries and express themselves fearlessly.
Ultimately, fashion in Tokyo is a reflection of the city itself—diverse, dynamic, and ever-evolving.
It invites individuals to embrace their unique identities, express their creativity, and find inspiration in the limitless possibilities of self-expression through clothing.
No matter where on the fashion spectrum you fall, we can easily create a day that centers around the type of fashion you are interested in, whether it's just to look and marvel or whether you want to drop some yen and spend the day finding some treasures to take home for yourself or your family and friends.
Here is a brief breakdown of some of the best fashion hot spots in Tokyo, depending on your interests and style:

Though it's quite famous for its iconic street scramble crossing, Shibuya is also a fashion mecca for anyone who is a trendsetter and urban fashion enthusiast. Centered around Shibuya 109, a popular department store catering to young women, the area offers an array of cutting-edge fashion, accessories, and cosmetics.
