When people think of Tokyo, they think of concrete and skyscrapers; but Tokyo is more than that. Behind the bustle and hustle of the city, deep in the mountains, lies a different Tokyo full of unspoiled nature, with wild rivers, lush forests, and stunning vistas. The best and easiest way to access this nature is to visit and hike Mt. Takao as a day trip from Tokyo!
Reachable via a train ride from Shinjuku to Takao Station, the urban landscape of Tokyo will gradually transform into lush greenery as you get closer and closer to Takaosanguchi Station.
The top of Mt. Takao can be reached via cable car, however, I recommend walking up (at least one way), to really get the most out of your visit to this beautiful mountain (trails are well marked, paved, and not too strenuous). Before your ascend, however, Yakuoin Temple should be your first stop: this ancient Temple is often the first stop for hikers to pray for a successful climb!
On the way to the top, you can visit the Monkey and Wildflower Park, where you can encounter Japanese macaques and admire up to 500 different species of wildflowers; a perfect resting point on your way to the top.
Once you have finally reached the top of Mt. Takao, sweaty and out of breath, your efforts will be rewarded instantly: stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, Tokyo, Lake Sagami, and on clear days, Mt. Fuji!
Whether you descend by foot or cable car, a traditional Japanese way to end a hike is to go for a relaxing soak in a Japanese hot spring. Luckily, there is a great one right near Takao station: Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu.
